Word Study
Many students and parents have experienced difficulty with traditional approaches to teaching spelling.  Students often memorized a list of words for a "Friday" test, but were unable to accurately spell these same words in daily writing.  While some students are able to memorize spellings, they may not possess knowledge of spelling skills that allow them to correctly spell unfamiliar words.

Fifth graders will NOT have "Friday" tests every week. The Word Study class will concentrate on daily accuracy of the first 500 most frequently used words in the English language (Core Words).  Students will learn skills and spelling rules (and exceptions to the rules which we call "word demons!")  We will learn to use spelling resources such as a dictionary, word wall, or spell check (on the computer) to spell accurately.

The final aspect of Word Study will include Vocabulary Development. We will learn various Latin and Greek roots and their influence on our language.  Students will be challenged with higher level vocabulary based on these base words.  Beware. . .  you may experience some loquacious fifth graders!

Every fifth grader will be given an individual dictionary to keep all year as an easy reference.  We will highlight Core Words as we practice them.  When doing dictation or review of Core Words, students will be encouraged to use their individual dictionaries as well as posted classroom lists to proofread all work.  There will be high expectations for accuracy in spelling all Core Words daily.
